Like most people the traveler simply wanted praise, which is cause for his dishonesty. This exaggeration was probably caused by a desire to assume satisfaction for defeating society’s pressures. When the traveler sighs he shows an understanding of his dishonesty. In the case of the traveler he stated he took the road less traveled, when in fact both roads were equally worn. At times defeating society’s pressures can cause the praise of others. With all choices made, regret is a possibility and curiosity is common. When the traveler considers returning to the fork in the road, he begins to doubt that possibility. Societal forces influence our decisions, this is represented by the traveler’s examination of each road. Whether we would like to admit it or not, when we make choices we are, to some degree, influenced by the world around us.
That choice is represented by the fork in the road. At some point in time everybody faces the need to make a choice. Like all people in this world, the traveler is a person searching for meaning in their life.

When the traveler eventually comes to a decision he considers returning to the fork in the road, and traveling along the path he had previously decided against. The two roads being equally worn represents a choice in which the result is unpredictable. The traveler’s examination of each road subtly suggest societal forces as a factor. When the traveler examines the fork, he determines that both roads are equally worn. The fork in the road is a metaphor designed to represent making decisions in life. When the traveler reaches the fork in the road he is forced to make a decision. The traveler symbolizes someone searching for meaning in their life. Symbolic Message: This poem contains numerous symbolical messages beginning with the traveler. The story ends with the traveler stating that in the future he would tell his story with a sigh, explaining, he took the road less traveled. The traveler suggests that he would come back and pursue the other road, however, later states that he doubts a return. Following his examination of each road, the traveler comes to a decision and follows one of the roads.
